Island Sušak

Island SušakSušak (Italian Sansego) is a small island on the northern Adriatic coast of Croatia, some 7 km southwest from the island of Lošinj and 10 km south of the island of Unije. The coast of Italy is about 120 km to the southwest. The island is about 3 km long and 1.5 km wide, with the highest elevation point at 98 m above sea level. The island is geologically different from other Croatian islands, as it is mostly formed of fine sand laid on rock base.

The island has a single settlement of the same name. Sušak has only 188 inhabitants (census of 2001), and a large emigration living in United States. There are 6 major family names of the residents of Sušak: Picinich, Mattesich, Morin, Bussanich, Scrivanich & Tarabocchia.

Sušak is famous for its wine and for the Sušak Expo (an international annual art event attracting leading contemporary artists, which has, in recent years, gained a reputation similar to the Venice Biennale).
